Sea Pines Tidings

Vera Fields, Editor

November, 1981 - BREWSTER, MASSACHUSETTS - Volume XIII

Fall is a beautiful time of the year - colors one never dreamed of seeing burst forth in all their glory and every turn of the road presented a new scene... so why do I feel sad? Now the winds blow cold across the bay and the trees have finally relinquished their hold on each tender leaf as a mother clings to her child before the first day of school. Thanksgiving time is here - buy that turkey, bake those pies, clean the house - everyone is going somewhere or expecting someone - a happy time they say to give thanks - and I do!! But why do I feel sad?

So long - goodbye - see you next spring - this one is off to Florida, that one is off somewhere else - everyone push the 'happy button" because you are supposed to be happy. There's shopping to be done, trees to be trimmed, cards to be sent. A new year is coming - something new to look forward to - but why do I feel sad?

It is very quiet at Sea Pines now. Many have gone south for the winter and many more have closed their units because of the high cost of heating for just one or two weekends. Then there are the other fortunates who are visiting friends, relatives, children, foreign places for the holidays and Sea Pines is so very still with the only sound being the wind - the never-ending wind, howling its loneliness across the frozen bay. But let's look forward. Spring is around the corner - can't see the corner yet, but it's there! But why do I feel sad?

Such melodious sounds have never before resounded from our Clubhouse as on that beautiful sunny Sunday afternoon when Joe Stukas enthralled us with his rendition of Rhapsody in Blue, and a young man named Alexander Henderson stood tall and straight before us and held us spellbound with his beautiful voice. Never before did the time go so quickly as we listened entranced.

Not to be mundane - but there are still some cards available - $5.25 for 25 cards. They are simple, lovely and show Sea Pines when most of us aren't here during a cold snowstorm. It's Deane Keuch's beautiful snapshot. Please call me or drop by for your cards.

Have a Happy Holiday Season! Vera

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Walked the beach today...noticed many immature open scallop shells on the beach and observed fairly clean, warm sand and signs of another winter to come. There are no more boats on the beach, or in the water, except for an abandoned and battered 14-foot wooden boat washed ashore near Point of Rocks. Bluff growth looks tanner and grayer...saw two boats on the horizon in calm water, probably fishing for other than bay scallops...no adult scallops this year - a bad year. Super quahogs though until November off Ellis Landing - littlenecks and cherrystones. Good time was had by many who raked and/or ate! Good quahogging (adult size) can be had off Ellis Landing in the trench at extra low tide (check Boston tide tables) throughout the winter. I'll see you there with chest-high waders, water resistant gloves and clothing - dress warmly!

Our fall season is underway with Dot Riether and her committee's golf match, get-togethers on Saturday nights (super sign-ups through November and most of December!). A pruning program to enhance our place is now under way. A nice slide show was held for us by Helen Childs, which included many candid shots of Sea Piners!

CMJ has amended its offer of settlement which was rejected by our Facilities Management Board and the Developer Liaison Committee, and which I consider to be no more than peace offerings.

November 28, 1981 is our financial and budget planning meeting for the calendar year 1982. Our Facilities Management Board members are required to attend, all Board members of Phases 1, 2, 3 and 4 are urged to attend, and every homeowner is invited to attend, observe and comment. Meetings, as you know, are open to all homeowners.

Looking ahead in other areas, we have a nice music piece planned by Joe Stukas, our get-together parties on Saturdays at the Clubhouse, the traditional tree lighting and decorating party, and New Year's Eve at the Clubhouse, and our traditional Arbor Day for plantings in April, 1982.

We wish everyone a happy holiday season, and Fran and I thank the many who have welcomed our first granddaughter, Sarah.

George Malone, Chairman
Sea Pines Facilities Management Board
November 1, 1981

P.S. Thanks to those who have left us for touching our lives.

COMING EVENTS

Don't forget your special Sea Pines holiday greeting cards - see page 6

GARDEN CLUB

The Sea Pines Garden Club was awarded a Certificate of Merit from the Brewster Garden Club for its landscaping, plantings and "contribution to the overall beauty of Brewster". Betty Wolfe and George Malone accepted the Award on behalf of the Association. Betty did the entrance plantings. No wonder Sea Pines looks "so purty"! Keep up the good work!

T-Shirts

Need a stocking stuffer? Another shirt to wear on the cruise? To sleep in? To jog in? To exercise in? To keep warm in? T-shirt stock has been replenished and are available - price is $6, fun to wear, excellent value. Contact Liz Antonez or Lynne Malone - our super salesgirls.

SEA PINES YACHT CLUB

The second Sea Pines sailboat races were held the weekend of August 15-16. There were two Sunfish races on each day, and competition was as brisk as the wind! Saturday's skippers were Keith Schroeder, Bob Grogan, Deane Keuch and Judge Goldblatt with son Henry as first mate...both races were won by Keith Schroeder by a wide margin. The fleet grew to a total of 7 boats on Sunday, when they were joined by Gary Waxman, Jack and Jeffrey Cartier. It was a sight to behold and very exciting for those on the beach who were aware the races were in progress. Both Sunday races were won by Jeff Cartier. Many boats on the beach did not participate, and we hope more will join in the fun next year.

A small reminder to those who keep their boats on the beach - please, don't tie your boat to a poor little bush or a snow fence on the dunes, or keep your boats on the grass. In a strong wind, it won't save your boat and it will destroy the bluff and kill the grass, both needed to prevent further erosion.

Jack Cartier, Captain

SATURDAY SOCIAL HOUR

Much thanks to our hardworking Saturday Social Hour Committee - Fran Parke, Nellie Peterson, Fran Malone, Mary Barrett and Peg Sheils. Hosts and hostesses have been hard to come by during the early fall, and our Committee did a bang-up job. Please remember, if no one is named as host or hostess for a particular Saturday, come anyway - there is a social hour regardless - and bring your own munchies. That's why the ladies had to work so hard this fall - but things are perking up and November and December Saturdays are signed up...

NEW YEAR'S EVE

which brings inc to the next subject. Most of our Committee members will be off-Cape New Year's Eve, and someone is needed to tie the thing together - as you know, everyone brings a snack or dessert... will someone volunteer? Please???!

CHRISTMAS GLOW

Our Christmas tree will be aglow again - The Friday after Thanksgiving is the big day and again Joe Stukas is to be thanked ... plus his elves! It will be nice to come home each evening and see its merry twinkling lights - a warm welcome to the weary wanderer, worker and wayfarer.

MORE GLOW

Sea Pines will hold its fourth annual Christmas Tree Decorating A party on December 5 weekend. Thanks again to hand Marjorie Fearns for the use of their lovely tree. It's fun to see the home-made decorations reappear as well as old and new friends. A hearty party!

LET'S SPREAD THE GLOW

Hopefully everyone has seen the sample holiday card now available for purchase. The scene is Deane Keuch' s fantastic photograph of our own beach stairs during the height of a wailing snowstorm. It has reproduced into a lovely holiday card, even more meaningful because it's "our stairs". The cards are packaged 25 to a package and cost $5.25. This is a Special Events function being done as a fun thing - not for profit. If you want your package, please call me, Vera Fields at home or at the office (945-3949). Keep trying!

AND MORE HOLIDAY GLOW

HELP WANTED: Needed for New Year's Eve. Host and/or Hostesses. Call Nellie Peterson, Frank Parke, Fran Malone, Mary Barrett or Peg Sheils for information as to procedure. HELP!

A FIRST

Sea Pines enjoyed its first concert - the weather was beautiful, but not half as beautiful as the music that flowed in the Club House on Sunday, November 8. Joe Stukas accompanied Alexander Henderson, a tenor with the most stupendous voice and kept the audience of almost 45 people completely enthralled for over an hour. Mr. Henderson is an honor student at the New England Conservatory of Music and just completed a concert tour of Europe and Israel. He was also selected by Luciano Pavoratti to join him in singing Happy Birthday at Boston's 350th birthday celebration. Mr. Henderson will be leaving in another year (1983) for further study in Vienna - which made his final song selection even more meaningful-"Vienna, City of my Dream". Last, but not least, Joe astounded everyone with his performance of "Rhapsody in Blue" ... Joe, we knew you could play, but you outdid yourself!!! This concert was a truly wonderful experience and we look forward to more of the same. Thanks Joe and Alexander Henderson.

WHO'S ON FIRST?

Below is the schedule for painting Sea Pines units:

The above schedule was established at a Special Meeting of the Facilities Management Board on August 8, 1981, and approved unanimously.

GOT A PROBLEM, COMPLAINT?

If you have a problem, a complaint, something bothers you, you aren't sure of procedure, or whatever - the proper procedure to follow is to contact the President of your Phase and discuss it with him/her. If your problem, complaint or bother cannot be resolved by your Phase President, then and only then should it be brought to the Grounds and Maintenance Committee for presentation to the Board. It just isn't fair to burden Bill Buchanan with each and every problem, complaint that could and should first be screened by your Phase President. In case you don't know who that person is:

This procedure was established at a Special Meeting of the Facilities Management Board on August 8, 1981, and approved unanimously.

PROBLEM, COMPLAINT?

However, if you have a problem or a complaint regarding the construction of your particular unit, please be reminded that you as an individual homeowner must take the responsibility to take your complaint directly to CMJ, sending a copy of all correspondence to George Malone, Scott Jordan and the Liaison Committee (Chairman Hubie Kelley), (See Minutes January 24, 1981).

ANOTHER FIRST

On Friday, October 16, about 25 lucky Sea Piners were able to sit in on a preview of the best film of the year! Helen Childs gave a slide presentation of her astute camera shots of people and things at Sea Pines. Everyone "ooohed" and "aaahed" at the fantastic close-ups of flower and fauna found here. Then zoom shots of Sea Pines from the flats, beach scenes (and boy did we have fun picking ourselves out in those shots). Her close-up pictures of various birds taken from he deck, while on a trip to Florida and a fantastic close-up of a bat taken from her window back home. Helen has won many awards for her photography in the category of nature pictures - birds and flowers-from the Needham Camera Club, the Cape Cod Viewfinders Camera Club and the New England Camera Club Council. Another viewing of her slide presentation will be available - watch our Bulletin Board for a date!

Speaking of pictures - remember that great shot that Deane Keuch took of our beach stairs during a snowstorm? Well, your Special Events Committee has had Holiday greeting cards printed with that picture - call Vera Fields (896-7643 or 945-3949) to buy yours. The cost is $5.25 for 25 cards with envelopes - and they are going fast! This project is not a money-making project - just a service for those who want to remember their friends at holiday time with a lovely card.

SECURITY

Are you closing down for the winter? Here are some timely tips to help prevent unwelcome "visitors" during your absence, assuming, of course, that you have had your unit properly winterized.

  1. LEAVE YOUR SHADES PART-WAY UP - nothing attracts vandals or burglars quicker than a home that obviously looks abandoned.
  2. DOUBLE SECURE YOUR DOORS AND WINDOWS - placing screws properly in the upper track of your windows and sliders will prevent them from being lifted out. Wooden or metal rods placed on the inside bottom track of your slider will prevent it from sliding open even if the catch has been jimmied. Your front door should have a dead-bolt at least one inch long.
  3. NOTIFY THE BREWSTER POLICE DEPARTMENT - Let them know the dates your unit will be vacant. They can't make daily checks, but will make closer surveillance of your unit periodically.
  4. PLACE LIGHTS ON A TIMER - preferably in more than one room and set them to operate at different hours.
  5. BURGLAR ALARMS - Consider having your unit electronically protected. There are several good professional companies on the Cape, some that can directly connect with the Police Department.
  6. If you intend to have friends and/or relatives use your unit during the winter, please let the Association know.
  7. Best of all - let your neighbors know - especially if you are fortunate enough to have a year-round neighbor! And remember, a home that looks deserted or abandoned invites unwelcome visitors.

Bob Sheils, Security Chairman

WELCOME

REMINDER

DIDJA know, when you leave your garage door open, little furry critters who are looking for a warm home for the long cold winter may find it inviting indeed! These little guys are also hungry critters, so be sure the trash shed doors are closed tight.

ROUND THE PINES

It was a beautiful weekend in October, and Sea Pines had its first golf tournament at the Brewster Golf Course. Dot Riether and Mary Earley did a bang-up job rounding all golfers to do their thing - all for fun. Barbara Kelley, Harriet Partain, Mary Barrett and Rex Dillon and Frank Sullivan were winners-the prize a bottle of wine. The hungry participants then enjoyed a real old fashioned cookout at the Club House - hot dogs, hamburgers, baked beans and clams followed by coffee and cake. A fun day! Bonnie Scotland was enhanced by Florence Mitchell and Dot Riether last May where they golfed at Glen Eagles and the old course at St. Andrews, followed by sightseeing. Bill and Peg Buchanan spent time in Toronto with their son, then flew to merry old England for a motor coach tour to Bath, Chester, the Lake District, Edinburgh, York and Stratford and then back to Elliot Lake, 350 miles north of Toronto to visit their other son. Welcome home! Joe and Rosemarie Stukas' daughter Allie Robinson ran the Bonnie Bell marathon in Boston wearing our own Sea Pines T-shirt. She came in 428 out of 7,300 racers. The same T-shirt adorned our Allie in the Newport, Rhode Island 26-mile marathon, which she finished in 3 hours 30 minutes. Thanks go to Joe and Rosemarie Stukas for their donation of that great 55 cup coffee urn! George and Fran Malone are the proud grandparents of Sarah Ann Cooney, born on August 24 and weighing in at 7 lbs. 10 ounces. Proud Mamma and Poppa are daughter Diane and Chris Cooney. Pete and Cindy Kawie's daughters Heather and Melissa modeled fall and winter wear at the Wequassett Inn, sponsored by the Children's Shop of Chatham, during luncheon. It was an extra special occasion for Melissa since August 11 was her 5th birthday! Dot Pendergast was nominated and elected President of the Lower Cape Chapter of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. Congratulations Dot!! Didja know that our annual New Year's party was begun in 1977 when the Kelleys, Cayleys and Freemans decided to spend New Year's eve together and they reserved the Clubhouse, sent handwritten invitations to all residents and arranged the menu alphabetically (see page 4). Didja know that in January, 1977, Scott Jordan and his CMA Corp. were selected by the Management Selection Committee, under Les Grohe's Chairmanship. Congratulations to Audrey Scalley on the birth of her new grandson Syan Howard born August 10 and weighing in at 7 lbs. 8 oz. Proud parents are Julie and Frank Scalley.
